The Book of John was authored by one of Jesus’ twelve disciples, John, who features in the gospel. John makes his mission for writing the book plain in 20:31; “that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” He details the many words and claims of Jesus, as well as the various responses from those listening; in either faith, amazement, caution or rejection. Listen as Cornerstone preachers unpack the narrative and invite us to reflect on our own response to Jesus.

Sermon 12 of 58

Why do you feel so empty?

Pete Woodcock, John 4:1 - 4:26, 6 March 2022

Pete continues our series in John’s gospel by preaching to us from John 4:1-26. In this passage we see an incredible interaction between Jesus and a Samaritan woman and its significance for us today.

John 4:1 - 4:26

4:1 Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John (although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples), he left Judea and departed again for Galilee. And he had to pass through Samaria. So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there; so Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour.

A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” (For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” 11 The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.” 13 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” 15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.”

16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.” 17 The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.” 19 The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.” 21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” 25 The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things.” 26 Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am he.”

So in John chapter 4, I'm gonna read from verse 1 to verse 26.

Now Jesus learned that the pharisees had heard that he was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John. Although, in fact, it was not Jesus who baptized but his disciples. So he left Judeia and went back once more to Galile. Now he had to go through Samaria So he came to a town in Samaria called Saikar. Near the plot of ground, Jacob had given to his son Joseph.

Jacob's well was there, and Jesus tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon. When a Samaritan woman came to draw water Jesus said to her, will you give me a drink? His disciples had gone into the town to buy food. The Samaritan woman said to him, You are a Jew, and I'm a Samaritan woman.

How can you ask me for a drink? For Jews do not associate. With Samaritans. Jesus answered her. If you knew the gift of God and who it is, that asked you for a drink.

You would have asked him and he would have given you living water. Sir, the woman said. You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob who gave us the well and drank from it himself?

As did also his sons and his livestock Jesus answered. Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst Indeed, the water I give them will become in them, a spring of water welling up to eternal life. The woman said to him, sir, give me this water so that I won't get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water. He told her, go, call your husband and come back I have no husband. She replied.

Jesus said to her, you are right when you say you have no husband. The fact is, You have had 5 husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have said just said is quite true. Sir, the woman said. I can see that you are a prophet.

Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but You Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem. Women, Jesus replied, believe me. A time is coming when you will worship the father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. Usamaritans worship what you do not know. We worship what we do know for salvation is from the Jews, yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the father in the spirit and in truth for they are the kind of worshipers the father seeks.

God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the spirit and in truth. The woman said, I know that Messiah called Christ is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us. Then Jesus declared, I the 1 speaking to you. I am he.

Pete. Well, it's it's an amazing passage, and problems with with John. Is that these passages are a bitch. In all kinds of ways, there's lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of references. To other parts of the bible, the Old Testament, particularly.

So it's quite hard preaching on it. We'll we'll try and make all Well, the help us now, we pray. Help us to hear what you say. Help us to revel in this amazing passage. Just to see your utter kindness that's going on here would just be so helpful for us.

To understand that. And so speak to our our very hearts, we pray. Our minds, our hearts, and and and show us just who you are in Jesus' name, amen. Now the the multimillion millionaire and multimillion selling author, Jack Higgins. So I don't know whether you heard him, but he's the 1 that wrote where Eagles dare and lots and lots of other books.

And he's still alive. But he wrote an article some years ago called things I wish I'd known at 18. And in that article, he he All his successes, which are massive. He sold hundreds of millions of books. But right at the end, he writes this.

I've climbed my personal everest, and so what? So what? It's a phrase that has Of the peak you're left with emptiness. That's a shocking thing, isn't it? He's got all that stuff and he's empty.

Raquel Welsh, we're going back to many years now. To the sixties and seventies. She was a very, very famous Hollywood idol. And she wrote right at the peak of her career, I had acquired everything I wanted, yet I was totally miserable. I thought it was very peculiar that I had acquired everything I had wanted as a child, wealth, fame, accomplishment in my career.

I had beautiful children and a lifestyle that seemed terrific, and yet I was totally and miserably unhappy. I found it very frightening that 1 could acquire all these things and still be so miserable. An amazing quote. Now I think that those quotes. They they sum up how a lot of us feel.

There's a drive in us. There's a thirst in us. There's a passion to get things to be things change ourselves in all kinds of ways perhaps. And it's very much like drinking salt water. And you know what?

If you drink salt water, you're still thirsty. And you still have to keep drinking. And the more you drink, the more thirsty you feel, and actually the sicker you feel, and you'll eventually go mad. Apparently. And and that's what keeps us going though.

If only I get this, I'll try this. I'll do this. I'll go there. I'll change myself in this way. And it's like there's a leech.

It's like there's a a tapeworm that's just going Give give give give give give and we give and we give and we give and we give and we give and we get the fame and the glamour and the education and whatever it is we want perhaps or at least some people do, and they reach the top and they say they're empty. Now in case you think yeah. But, you know, I mean, who is Jack Higgins? She's pretty old. He's about 90 now, and who is Raquel welch?

She never heard of her. Casey think Gosh Gosh Pete is really out of date. I use them because they're just really very, very useful quotes. But I looked up famous people that are dissatisfied with their life. I'll just put that in.

26 came up. Pink, Bruce Springstein, Arianda Grande. Where we however you say a name. Emma Stone, Adele, Serena Williams, Lady Gaga. All of them so unhappy that many of them have thought about suicide and actually gone down that route.

It's extraordinary, isn't it? They've reached the top. I mean, you can't get topper than those. And they're so unhappy. They're so dissatisfied.

Now my question is this. Is there an answer to this? Is there an answer? Is it that you reach the top and then you're just empty and dissatisfied? And what you then need to do is to get some counselors that cost you a lot of money to just sort of try to help you navigate through life so that you can navigate through this mundane world really and and try not to kill yourself.

Is is that all there is or is there hope? Well, this is why John wrote his book. John wrote his book that you might have life That's why he wrote his book. So what I want you to do is, if you if you will, in your imagination, is to come with pink and Bruce Springstein and Arianda Grant how did you say her name? Her Arianda, anyway.

And Emma Stone and Adele, and, you know, they're all probably trying to out sing sing each other and Serena Williams will be batting away and Lady Gaga will be dressed up as a lump of meat or whatever it is. And we're all gonna go back to to John's gospel. And we're gonna we're gonna start off starting point is with all those celebrities where we left off. We're gonna go to the river of Jordan and we're just gonna hear the echoes of John the Baptist, and then we'll move on to our next spot. But we're all going together.

Okay? You're standing next to Lady Gaga. We're going back down and we're going back. I mean, they would think it was pretty odd. I mean, she dressed up as a lump of meat if if you didn't know that.

And we're going back. And we're hearing as we're coming to the River Jordan, we're going back 2000 years, we walk into the River Jordan, and then we hear the voice. I'm a witness. I'm a voice crying out. I testify to the 1 that comes after me because he passes me because he was before me.

He is the light of the world. Make straight Way for the Lord, open up the way for the Lord to come into your life. He is so great that I am unworthy. To touch his sandals, to undo them, or to do them up. Look, the lamb of god, who takes away the sin of the world I saw the spirit of God come down from heaven as a dove and remained on him.

And all I can do is baptize with water, It's a picture of what he can do. He baptizes with the Holy Spirit. I testify that he is the son of god He is the joy bringing, bridegroom. He comes from above and is above all. He is sent by God and speaks the very words of God.

God is his father. He is the son and the father loves the son and has placed everything into his hands. Whoever believes in the sun has eternal life. Whoever rejects the sun will not see life, but God's wrath will remain upon him. So turn to the lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world.

Don't follow me. He must increase. I must decrease Follow him, look to him, turn to him. That's what we're gonna hear. That's what you hear.

That's the sermon. That's all of John Sermon's put together. And so we see this 1 that John is revelling in is pointing away from himself. But John is speaking of, he's pointing to none other than Jesus. So he sends us to Jesus us.

So what does John do then? He takes us to see Jesus. And we follow Jesus us to Sumaria, where we listen in to a private conversation. It's like a 1 to 1 It's actually amazingly set up just like a counseling session. It's a 1 to 1 with Jesus.

All those celebrities you're you're with have probably spent millions, and I don't mean I'm not really exaggerating. Probably spent millions on expert counselors to sort out their anxieties and their pressure depressions and their emptiness and their suicidal tendencies. They've reached the top, and when you reach the top and have their money, that's where you find the counselors. And largely, those experts are only going to help them to cope with disappointment in life. They're largely only going to help them navigate through the feelings of emptiness and survive.

Until death. But this 1, that John the Baptist has just preached about, he's got a lot more than So I'm so pleased that that group are with you as they listen into a genuine word of God counselor. Let's listen in to see whether he really has an on an ordinary woman. First thing I want you to see is surprise. There's surprise everywhere.

In this. I don't know whether you noticed it, but there's so many surprises in this counseling session. The first surprise is in verse 4, Now we had to go to Sumaria. No. He didn't.

But, yes, he did. No, he didn't. Yeah. He did. He had to go to Sumaria.

No. He didn't because he's what what John the Baptist has just told us. He is the creator of the universe. He is the living 1. He doesn't have to go anywhere, but he did have to go to Samaria.

Why? For this woman to meet him. It's amazing He went to Samaria to meet a woman. The Word of God comes to speak to this woman this lone woman. The light of the world, the joy bringing bridegroom comes to a woman who tried many husbands The 1 who's from above comes to this woman looking down a well.

The 1 who baptizes with the Holy Spirit comes to back ties her with the Holy Spirit. He had to go to her Why? Because he's full of grace. He's full of kindness. It's a surprise.

This 1 that John the Baptist points to and says that he surpasses me in every way because he was before me is the 1 that has to go to some area because he's full of grace. Look at the second surprise, you get it in verses 7 7 to 9. The woman's actually surprised. Why are you talking to me? She says?

If you look at those words, why talk to me? You know? What? Some Jews don't associate with us? It's a great surprise that he's talking to her.

He's a Jew, she's a Samaritan. There's a religious barrier between them. That's a surprise. Look at the surprise in verse 27. The disciples come back.

They've been off trying to get some bread. They come back, and it says just just then, his disciples returned, and they were surprised to find him talking to a woman. He's talking to a woman. Men and women don't talk to each other in public. Not in these days.

In those days, brother. They they are so surprised if you read on, they can't they can't speak. They can't speak because he's speaking to a woman. Look at the surprise in the end of verse 6. It was it was about noon when a Samaritan woman came to draw water.

What on earth was she out in the middle of the day drawing water for? You don't draw water in the middle of the day unless you are someone who is rejected by the other women who had already been to draw water early morning before the heat of the sun. Had come up. And why is she rejected? Why is she on her own?

Well, look at verse 18. The fact is you've had 5 husbands, and the man you are now with not your husband? She was morally rejected. That's a surprise that Jesus is there talking to this woman. But the biggest surprise is verse 10.

Jesus had come with a gift to her a gift from God to her. And so Jesus breaks through every single barrier. Man, woman, the gender barrier. He breaks through the religious barrier. He breaks through all of these barriers to bring to her a gift of God.

First 10, look at it. Jesus answered her, if you knew the gift of God and who it was, that asks you for a drink. You would ask him, and he would have given you living water. You don't have to pay it, This is the life giver, the word of God, come with a gift. This is the 1 that John the Baptist you've just heard preached comes with a gift.

The living water is not based on merit, it's not based on pedigree, it's not based on gender, It's not based on class or race or religion. It's a gift. Now I hope at this point that not only are you listening, but pink is listening as well. And Serena Williams is listening. And the other 1, Arianda, or whatever name is.

I hope she's listening. I hope they're all list because Christianity is a surprise. You may well be used to it, but it's a surprise. It is utterly surprising. The Jesus that you've just heard John the Baptist preach The Jesus that John himself writes about in John chapter 1 has come to this woman come to town.

It's grace upon grace and grace is a surprise. It's not a surprise. And Jesus breaks through the morality and all the all of those barriers. It's a surprise. Because you see, with morality, it's not a surprise And with religion, it's not a surprise.

And with sort of all kinds of works, it's not a surprise. But grace, that God would come to ordinary people with a gift of the water of life is a surprise. That's why Jack Higgins and Raquel Welsh when they reached the top of surprise. It's empty up there. They thought it'd be full.

Work your way up become famous, get all that, and I'll be full. And they're surprised when it isn't. Because they're missing everything. Grace is a surprise. That's my first point, second point is the gift.

Look at the gift. First, When a Samaritan woman came out to draw water, Jesus said to her, will you give me a drink? His disciples have gone into town to buy food. The Samaritan woman said to him, you're a Jew and I'm a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink for Jews to not associate?

With Samaritans. Jesus answered if you knew if you knew if you knew the gift of God and who it was who asked you for a drink? You asked asked him and he would have given you living water. If you knew, the problem is she didn't know. And that's her great problem.

She didn't know. She didn't know that well there was such an amazing gift of God. She didn't know and she didn't know who she was talking to. She's ignorant on those 2 accounts, and because she's ignorant, she doesn't ask for anything more in the end than sort of water. To her, Jesus is a very strange Jews speaking to her and asking for water, she's probably thinking and going down her normal roots of thinking.

Oh, here's another man. That wants me to provide for him. About 5 of them, and I've got 1 I'm living with. She knew that she had many problems. She knew that she had many difficulties.

She was aware of the many needs in her life, and the desires and and and even a sense of emptiness. But but she didn't understand the depth of her need because she's running around trying surface things as those famous people are. She didn't really understand how deep her need was. Look at verse 10 again, Jesus answered her. If you knew the gift of God and who it was who asked you for a drink, you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water, sir.

She said, The woman said. You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where can you get living water for? What are you talking about? Right?

Are you greater than our father, Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself? As did his sons and livestock. Don't you understand our tradition? I mean, I'm in a tradition. We've got water.

We've got a history, Jacob, our ancestors. Through water and and they brought life and this is life. This is it. It's water to to our sons and even to me now and and to our livestock and what are you talking you haven't even got a bucket? Yeah.

Jesus says, I'm talking about something different. You can't get it, can you? You're still on the surface. I'm talking about something that's out of this world. I'm talking about a gift of God.

You drink this water and you'll always be thirsty. You drink and you wanna come back tomorrow. You're gonna have to come back tomorrow and drink again. I'm talking about something much deeper in your life. You're so surface.

You don't understand. You don't understand. There's a gift God and you don't understand the 1 who's talking to you and therefore you don't ask for it and therefore you're just satisfied with coming out every day to get more drink and more drink and try and fill your life up. Get rid of your thirst. And then Jesus goes on and shows us just how thirsty she is.

Doesn't really even understand how thirsty she is. Look at verse 15. The woman said to him, sir, give me this water that I won't get thirsty and have to keep coming to draw water. It's brilliant, isn't it? Yeah.

Gosh. 1, you haven't got a bucket. 2, what are you talking about? Are we in the area of spiritual dynamics the area of the spirit? Here and spiritual things.

I'm not really interested in that. But, you know, give me the water, then I won't be out of cup. You know? And and And she doesn't realize her deep spiritual needs. So look what happens.

Look what he does. He's a master counselor. Verse 16. He told her, go and call your husband and come back. What's that gotta do with anything?

Right? I have no husband, she replied. Jesus said to her, you're right. To say that you have no husband. Yeah.

You're absolutely right there. That's 1 thing you got right. The fact is you've had 5 husbands and the man that that you have is not your husband. What you've said is quite true. The kind of water I'm talking about is not the kind that you're expecting.

You want living water. You've just said you want living water, so you won't get thirsty again. Go and get your husband. There's a sudden change in the story here. Because what I'm trying to show you is By the fact that you've gone through 1 husband, another husband, another husband, another husband, another husband, and the bloke you're with now, is showing that you are utterly so thirsty in your soul.

You're as dry as anything, and you're trying surface water and you're just drinking and then drinking and then drinking and it's never really filling you. Don't you see? The real problem is you are totally empty inside. I don't have a husband. No.

Men have been running your life for years. This 1 man after the other, you were parched. Your life is showing you how thirsty you are. Pink, your life is showing you how thirsty you are. The other 1, Serena Williams.

Just gotta win another 1. Just gotta win another 1. Just gotta get to the top. Everything says you're just amazingly thirsty. And don't you see?

It doesn't satisfy. Your as dry as a bone. There's a deep thirst within. You've been running off the false masters in these blokes. And you know nothing of eternal satisfaction.

You don't know the gift of God, and you don't know the 1 who's asking you for a drink of water. And that is the trouble with the world. It doesn't know. It doesn't understand its central need. It's always if only I get this water, if only I get this drink, if only I get this.

So I hope the celebrities are listening. We moved from John the Baptist that's pointed us to this Christ, and now we're seeing this Christ in action with a single person. Do you see what Jesus is offering? No more thirst. Do you see what Jesus is offering?

Not pleasures and toys and technology and fame and sophistication, and all the world you could have is not big enough for your soul. You could have the whole world and you'll still be thirsty. You could reach the top and you'll still be thirsty. You'll reach the top and you think Okay. Is that it?

So what? You are too big. The universe is too small for your soul. You need the gift of God. You're made up of mostly water and you're totally dehydrated.

Jesus says I've come to bring something that is much bigger, much deeper, that will quench your thirst to your very soul, if you knew the gift of God, the glorious possibility that there is a God who is so much bigger than you and everything in this universe who can fill you who can fill you. The gift of God. It's described in the bible as indescribable. It's described as unsearchable riches of god. This gift that will cleanse you from your guilt to satisfy you intellectually will satisfy you in the heart, will satisfy your emotions, the most expensive gift in the universe.

The fullness of the maker of the universe will give to you. The gift is the holy spirit. It's a person. It's none other than god himself, his spirit coming to live in you. Just turnover.

This is the only verse, I want you to turn over to John 7 and verse 37 to 39. John 7 verse 7 to 39. Jesus is at a festival. He stands up in John 37 at John 7 verse 37, Jesus stood up and said in a loud voice, so he wants everybody to hear. So he wants the celebrities to hear.

He wants you to hear. Let everyone who's thirsty. Come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me as the scripture said, rivers of living water will flow from within him by this he meant the spirit. Constantly in John.

You go from the outward physical surface to the inward spiritual deep. John baptizes with water, he says. It's not enough. That's just a symbol. Jesus baptizes with the Holy Spirit.

You need the Holy Spirit. You need no other than God, the Holy spirit. You need none none other than God the Holy Spirit to come, believing Christ, and long comes the Holy Spirit. He needs to live in you, and he's like, fresh living water bubbling inside the God inside you. Is changing you.

Living water. Whoever drinks the water I give him says Jesus in John chapter 4. Whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst indeed the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life. It's a spring. It's streams.

It's alive. It's not a bucket with a bit of water in it. It's life giving and when you know what happens when a spring bubbles up and turns into a river. Fish and plants and birds and insects and crops and trees and animals drink from it. It's refreshing.

It's satisfying. It's stimulating. This isn't theoretical. Ask There's a gift. God will come into you.

None other than God. You can reach the top pink. Lady Gaga, you can wear your lump of meat. So that everybody will start talking about you and take photos of you. So you're sorry.

I was gonna say something like rude, but I can't get it out of my head now. I can't get it off my tongue. You can have mediocre music and make everybody look at you by dressing up as a lump of meat and reach the top that way. But the lump of meat won't satisfy you. You'll always be thirsty.

And so it leads me to my third point. Verse 10, she needs to understand the gift marvellous. This is god. And she needs to understand who's speaking to us. You remember those 2 things?

They go together. You understand the gift and you under need to understand who's speaking to you. And through this conversation, and I wish I had more time in some ways, I'd love to come back to this. Just to show you how Jesus just opens her up. It's it's fantastic.

The whole thing is you wanna understand counseling. This is how to do it. And he just opens her up. And so he does. So verse 9 19, she's come to the point where he she understands who he is.

At least in some measure. So it's sir, the woman said, I can see that you are a prophet. So he's not just a strange Jew asking for a drink of water. Now she understands he's he's a prophet, a prophet of God. Someone who really understands people from God.

But perhaps that's just a little bit too challenging. He talked about 5 husbands a month or He knows me. He's a prophet of God. This is a little bit scary. And what do we do when God comes near us and starts to expose our sin?

We protect ourselves. So she starts waffling on about religion. She plays the religion card and she plays the race card. Look at verse 20. Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain.

What's she talking about? Well, on this mountain, but you Jews claim the place where we must worship is Jerusalem. Woman Jesus said, sis, like, stop this. You're back to the surface again. You're back to you're back to taking it off the issue.

You're back to just denying the gift of God. Apparently, he answers her woman, Jesus replied, believe me, a time is coming. Just remember that time is coming there. When you will worship the father, he's talking about god as a father. Neither on this mountain or in Jerusalem.

Usamaritans worship what you do not know. We worship what we do know for salvation from the Jews, yet a time is coming, and has now come when true worshipers will worship the father in spirit and in truth For they are the kind of worshipers, the Father seeks. God is spirit and his worshipers must worship in spirit and truth. Listen, the gift of God, the Holy spirit is the 1 that will come in your life, and you're no God as father. It doesn't matter which mountain you're on.

That's all physical. That's all religion. You've changed the subject. You've diverted it from you and God. You asking for the gift.

And you've suddenly waffled on about religion. And you're arguing about race. What about this? On this? You're that?

I brought up like this, missed mountain, that mountain. None of that's important. That's why Jerusalem isn't important. Let anyone have it who wants it. Yeah.

It's nothing to do with us anymore. It's a physical place. Let someone have it. No. No.

What is really important? Is you know God as your father. God, as your father, the Holy Spirit in your life, and Jesus is his Savior. So muddled up that was a bit, but that's great. So she's packed a religion.

She's back to places. She's back to temples. She's back to cities. And he says, you need to be born again. You need to know God as your father.

The last person Jesus did a 1 to 1 with was with with the religious man, nicodemus. And he said you need to be born again. And he was in Jerusalem, and he was a religious bloke. But notice this. We're nearly finished.

Notice he said twice. A time is coming, verse 21, and verse 23, a time is coming and has now come. A time, a time. You know anything about John, and we've seen this already, the time, the hour. The hour has come.

The hour is coming. My hour has not yet come. A time has come. A time is coming. Is always going to his death.

It's always pointing at the cross. The time that Jesus came into this world in order for you and I and pink and Serena Williams to have the gift of God and this woman to have the gift of God is that I would die on the cross to deal with your guilt and your sin. If you knew who was speaking to you, I'm not just a prophet. I'm a savior. I'm the Messiah.

I'm the 1 Who is the temple? You don't need a temple anymore. I'm the 1 that will bring you to God. I am the sacrifice. You don't need to sacrifice.

I'll pay the price for you. This is grace upon grace. A time is coming. When I will die. And because I've died on the cross for you and I ascend to heaven, I'll send you the holy spirit into your life and you'll become a child of the living god.

See, there's a surprise that I didn't tell you, but it is amazing. The wonderful thing about this story is The surprising thing about this story is that the woman would never have found this living water, which I think did and you'll see that next week. She would never have found it or or received the gift of the living water if Jesus hadn't been physically for physical water. If he hadn't been physically thirsty, the conversation wouldn't have happened. But he had to be physically stee for this conversation to happen.

And that's not the last time that Jesus was particularly. That's not the last time he says I thirst. Sorry. I said I wouldn't turn to any other verse, but I'm I lied. Just turn to John chapter 19.

John chapter 19 and verse 30 28. John 19, right at the end of the book, this is time. His time has come. John 19 verse 28 to verse 30. Jesus is on the cross.

Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that scripture might be fulfilled. Jesus said, I'm thirsty. Yeah? The woman would never receive the gift unless Jesus was thirsty. I'm thirsty.

Jar of wine vinegar was there. So they soaked a sponge in it, put it on a sponge on the stalk, of his up plant and lifted up to Jesus lip lips when he received the drink, Jesus said it is finished. With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. He was thirsty in torment. Taking the punishment of all our wrong so that we'd be forgiven, that we may know the favor God and the gift of God and the Holy Spirit in our life.

So pink. Arianna. What is her name? Arianna. Yes.

Serena Williams. Bruce Springstein. Bruce Springstein. But he could outdo all of their musically, I have to say. But anyway, Bruce Springsstein.

All of those disappointed with life. Yeah? Do you know who they've all gone to? To find life. Oprah Winfrey.

There's 26 of them on her page She's not helped any of them. Why would you go there? Oprah Winfrey. Please. Don't get her.

Could Jesus. It's extraordinary because he's come to you. You have to be very rich to go to Oprah You have to be famous and someone to go to Oprah, but my savior who is the richest being in the whole universe came to a woman and we don't even know her name. That's the difference. You have to be very rich to go to the count and all he'll do at best, and I'm not saying, you know, they won't have some good things to say.

They'll just help you navigate through the world of this appointing world. Jesus says, you don't have to navigate through a disappointing world. You can know the gift of God. You can have rivers in you. Bubbling up life.

You can know God in your heart. You'll never be thirsty again. I'm not giving you some advice to help you through a disappointing life. I'm giving you life. There's a total difference.

Pink. You'll never hear this, I guess. I wish you did. Listen to Jesus. Come to Jesus.

You, because you're standing with them. Listen to John the Baptist who points to Jesus. Just go to him. Come to Jesus. He's got the gift of the Holy Spirit for you because he was thirsty for you.

That's how much he loves you. Whoever believes in me as the scripture has said streams of living water will fro flow from within him. By this, he meant the spirit whom those who believe in him were later to receive. Have you received the holy spirit? I mean, you know, is your Christian life sort of dead and dry and you're just it's all about sort of duty and, well, maybe you're not a Christian.

Maybe you've never received the gift of the Holy Spirit. Maybe the spirit isn't in you. Maybe it's just sort of outward religion. Maybe it's just the water baptism that you've had of John The Baptist. And you've never known the baptism of the Holy Spirit, which is to come to Christ and to know who he is.

And if you haven't, then ask for the gift. All you got to do is ask. He's come to you this evening. I mean, I don't know who you are. He may be on the Internet thing.

Maybe you're just whizzing around and you suddenly come up to this. I don't know. Hope so. I hope pink, you're listening. I don't want your money.

I haven't got any of your albums, so I don't want them. Bruce Springs, I'll have some of your albums. Yeah, please. Yeah. Could I have your latest 1, actually?

I haven't heard that yet. But Bruce, if you're listening, come to Christ. Yeah? Serena. We've got some people that like tennis.

You could help them out a little bit, but we don't really want that. We want you to come to Christ. Yeah? You're just tuning in, you're just listening in. Come to Christ.

Come to Lord Jesus. Ask him. Because he's come to you this evening. Let's close our eyes and bow our heads and Why not ask him? Why not ask him now?

To be your savior.
