Corona Chronicles 2: S8:E5: Three Denials

Various speakers, Mark 14:66 - 14:72, 12 February 2021

We have all been plagued with fear at some point in our lives, but would we be willing to protect ourselves at the expense of a loved one? Ben and Dean discuss how Peter did just that when he for sure that he wouldn't.
Mark 14:66-72

Mark 14:66 - 14:72

66 And as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came, 67 and seeing Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with the Nazarene, Jesus.” 68 But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you mean.” And he went out into the gateway and the rooster crowed. 69 And the servant girl saw him and began again to say to the bystanders, “This man is one of them.” 70 But again he denied it. And after a little while the bystanders again said to Peter, “Certainly you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.” 71 But he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know this man of whom you speak.” 72 And immediately the rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had said to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” And he broke down and wept.

Welcome back to corona chronicles. Crown of thorns and we are getting closer to the actual crown of thorns scene, aren't we? Mhmm. So the end of chapter 14, so we're gonna pick it up at verse 66 and read to the end of the chapter. While Peter was below in the courtyard, 1 of the servant girls of the high priest came by, When she saw Peter, warming himself, she looked closely at him.

You also were with that Nazarene Jesus, she said, but he denied it. I don't know or understand what you're talking about, he said. And went out into the entrance. When the servant girl saw him there, she said, again, to those standing around them. This fellow was 1 of them.

Again, he denied it. After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, surely you are 1 of them. For you are a Galileian, He began to call down curses, and he swore to them. I don't know this man you're talking about. Immediately, the cock crowed the second time.

Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him. Before the cock crows twice, you will disown me 3 times and he broke down and wept. It's an emotional scene, isn't it? And we're here because Jesus has been arrested and everyone's fled from Jesus except Peter to be fair to him. Although he he doesn't really know exactly what to do because we were just saying before we start recording this that he was the 1 who drew the sword when Jesus was arrested.

He was ready to chop someone's ear off and have a go and protect Jesus to his death He was that he was ready for that. But Jesus has told him, no, those who live by the sword die by the sword, that's not how we do things. Yeah. And so he he's just this sort of mixed bag of emotions because he he desperately wants to be with Jesus so he follows him that everyone else is gone. He has absolutely no idea what to do.

And the the the gap between his emotions and his mouth that's very, very short, isn't it? Yeah. Yeah. You know, That's right. As we've found out in other occasions.

Yeah. Yeah. You know, he he he's the he is this big tough guy on the outside. And and when he's faced with an opponent of an equal size -- Mhmm. -- with a roam guard, but when he went but we crumbles into quivering wreck when he's faced with with a girl.

Yeah. That's what That's right. You know, the girl the girl sort of she doesn't get his full blown anger because she's only she's the 1 that sort of appears in the denial before the third time. Yes. So he swears at the other bloke.

He swears all the others around him, but But the girl is sort of the 1 that -- Does it go. -- kicks the the stool leg. Yep. You know? Yep.

And he can't just a couple of times. Yeah. Yellow at her and tell her to No. No. Because Jesus says that's not how we do it.

No. But but, you know, he but I just wonder like, I mean, kids can be very very cruel. You know, I just want I mean, I know she's not necessarily a kid. She's a servant girl but -- Yeah. -- but she's a servant of the high priest.

She must have been aware of what was going on. Right. You know, servants hear a lot of stuff, don't they? Yes. So she's going by and she sees him and and she sort of sees her chance.

Yep. To have a go at 1 of his followers, you know. And so I guess that's what she's doing. Right? By identifying him with Jesus.

She's also saying you're equally guilty. You should be on trial too. Yeah. Yeah. And yeah, I guess that's why Peter is suddenly I think it's afraid, isn't he?

Yeah. Yeah. Because he doesn't he doesn't know what to do. Oh yeah. I mean I think we would be as well, maybe afraid, confused, just not understood what is going on.

This is us in the office, isn't it on a Monday morning in the reception area when someone's making a coffee. Yeah. So you're alright. Good weekend? Yeah.

And we're like, I thought I saw you outside that church on Sunday. Do you go to church? Oh, Yeah. Yeah, you know. And I used to be like this in school.

Yeah. I used to I I mean I was because because when you're a kid and no no 1 else does what your family does, it's it's embarrassing. Yeah. And so you I think all of us at some point in our lives have been Peter here haven't we? Yeah.

Yeah. That's right. I mean, you know, there's there's always that moment, isn't it? Yeah. Where yeah.

And I I normally have it when I'm passed I'm like, why did I say that? You know, I wasn't read. Why wasn't I ready? Yeah. But that's the nature of being put on the spot, isn't it?

Yeah. You you don't expect it. Yep. You know, but but he I guess, you know, the thing the thing that's closest to him is is the denial. I don't know or understand what you're talking about, you know.

And then he wants to get out of there. But but she's She's like a dog with a bone. You know? Yeah. She sees him at the entrance and says says to him again.

His accent gives him away. Yeah. Exactly. Yeah. Gaili.

Gaili. You must be with him. Why else would you be down here? Yeah. I think So Jesus has has prophesied this, which is ironic because The scene before this, Jesus was getting beaten by guards.

Yeah. He'd use blindfolded and they were saying prophesy, prophesy. Well, here, literally, just outside of the the courtroom where that's happening is a prophecy coming through. Yeah. Yeah.

Because Jesus has told him in in the last chapter you will all fall away. I will strike the Shepard and the sheep will be scattered. And Peter said even if all fall away, I will not. So you know, back that was back then before, you know, that's when he was still like macho Peter with the sword on his side and all of this stuff. And so I think when Peter remembers these words.

That's, you know, the cockroaches. That was Jesus' prophecy. And he must just go, what have I done? Yeah. Yeah.

But you know, Jesus was right. How could I have How could I have done this to the 1 that I love and I'm so passionate about? But he also must have remembered what Jesus had said with that prophecy because he he says you will all fall away firstly, But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galile Lee, which is this. You're gonna fall away and I think in another gospel, Jesus says specifically to Peter, Satan has asked to sift you, but I have prayed for you. Yeah yeah yeah.

And what an amazing sort of mixture of emotions again go on in Peter. I've let the master down -- Yeah. -- and yet he promised still that he would go ahead of me into Galile. Yeah. What an amazing, you know, and then he just breaks down and we and what encouragement what an encouragement for us as well is the disciples, you know, knowing knowing some of the background of this, Mark is probably writing in Rome -- Mhmm.

-- you know, possibly to the Roman Church -- Mhmm. -- and knowing that they're gonna go for persecution -- Yep. -- you know, think about Nero and and others and here's 1 of the chief disciples and he's fallen. Yeah. He's he's -- Right.

-- sown Jesus -- Yes. -- and yet there's hope for him. Yes. And we'll see that in the next steps as well. And we don't What what an amazing thing for us as Christian -- Yeah.

-- today and then Yep. When we go through when we when we go through persecution, it's gonna be something that that is gonna be a challenge to us, what we're gonna do. You know, but but there is depending on, you know, we might be we might be ready and we should be ready -- Mhmm. -- to stand strong to have the answer. Yep.

But eve you know, when we don't. Yep. There's grace. Yeah. Yeah.

If if if if it's if we're, you know, we're broken. Mhmm. You know, this is the rock that the church is gonna be built on and there's grace in the foundations of the church. Yeah. That's right.

Yeah. There's great there's grace, you know, in Jesus' words. Yeah. Yeah. You know, he he he's the 1, his message.

Yep. Is is is what what the church is gonna be built on and he's the 1 who, you know, there's a place in Timothy isn't there where where, you know, he's we're we're we're reminded that Jesus cannot discern himself, you know. Mhmm. And so he will he will forgive and restore. Yeah.

So Chris bill. Yeah.
