Mark 6:16-29

Mark 6:16 - 6:29

16 But when Herod heard of it, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised.” 17 For it was Herod who had sent and seized John and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, because he had married her. 18 For John had been saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” 19 And Herodias had a grudge against him and wanted to put him to death. But she could not, 20 for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he kept him safe. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed, and yet he heard him gladly.

21 But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his nobles and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee. 22 For when Herodias’s daughter came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests. And the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it to you.” 23 And he vowed to her, “Whatever you ask me, I will give you, up to half of my kingdom.” 24 And she went out and said to her mother, “For what should I ask?” And she said, “The head of John the Baptist.” 25 And she came in immediately with haste to the king and asked, saying, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.” 26 And the king was exceedingly sorry, but because of his oaths and his guests he did not want to break his word to her. 27 And immediately the king sent an executioner with orders to bring John’s head. He went and beheaded him in the prison 28 and brought his head on a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother. 29 When his disciples heard of it, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.

Okay. Welcome back to another Coroda Chronicles. We're still in chapter 6 and we're picking up in verse 17. So let's read this. For Herrod himself had given orders to have John arrested, and he had him bound and put in prison.

He did this because of Haronius, his brother's brother, Philip's wife, whom he had married. For John had been saying to herod, it is not lawfully you to have your brother's wife. So her rodeo's nurse to grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she was not able to because herod feared John and protected him knowing him to be a righteous and holy man. When herod heard John, he was greatly puzzled, yet he liked to listen to him.

Finally, the opportune time came. On his birthday, Herrod gave a banquet for his high officials in military commanders and the leading men of Galile. When the daughter of her herodias came in and danced, she pleased Heradin the guests. The king sets the girl Ask me for anything you want, and I'll give it to you. And he promised her with an oath.

Whatever you ask, I will give you, up to half my kingdom. She went out and said to her mother, what shall I ask for? The head of John The Baptist, she answered. And once the girl hurried into the king with the request, I want you to give me right now the head of John The Baptist on a dish. The king was greatly distressed.

But because of his oath, his son is dinner guest, He did not want to refuse her. So he immediately sent an executioner with orders to bring John's head. The man went, they headed John in the prison, and brought back his head on a dish. He presented it to the girl, and she gave it to her mother. On hearing of this, John's disciples came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.

What's a great story? Great and Gory. Yeah. I mean, it's not a nice story. But, you know, it's just It's full of of of, you know, intrigue and and, you know, sort of twists and turns.

Herrod, what a what a a horrible man? Yeah. You you know, he's just he's the just a typical leery bloke, isn't it? You know? And and and and superstitious.

Mhmm. And stupid -- Yeah. -- you know. Yeah. So he's just drunk on power and and actually blind and deaf.

You know, it's it's strange isn't it? I think I think with herods, I mean, yesterday, we saw. He was like, well, I at this bloke. And so we then go back into the story and we see that he's very guilty for what he's done. So I think he's scared.

He's a scared man, isn't he? Because he's thinking on man. If if this is John is return from the dead on in big trouble. Yeah. Because remember what happened.

Yeah. You know, that birthday party, I was like And the way that he viewed John before. He he clearly knew that John was someone someone who was a man of God. Yeah. He has a man who spoke the word of God.

He said, you know, we're talking about Jesus. Yeah. And and Heaven gets that, he gets this man is someone that he shouldn't kill. He should listen to. He's list he's he's interested.

Yeah. He's he's listening to the word of God. Yeah. And then when it comes to it though, not really it's not really hitting his heart, is it? He's he's he's titillated by, you know, he's sort of, you know, John's a John's probably quite a man's man.

You know, he's in his he's a very strange person. He's he's closed and he's dialed all that kind of stuff we heard about earlier, didn't we? And he he'd like to listen to him, but he wasn't he wasn't really listening to him. He didn't really take to heart what yet what his message was. And yeah.

He feared him, you know? Yeah. But it's clear that that actually he's a man who's totally ruled by his desires -- Yeah. -- his urges and and what other people think of it. Yeah.

Yeah. So yes, he likes John, but he there's no real fear of God there. Yeah. And we know that because as soon as he sort of fancies weirdly is is wife's daughter. Yeah.

He's dance for them in a very provocative way. Yeah. And then he gives it a stupid, you know, men when they they're they're a little bit you know, what a month? He's probably had a few drinks. He sees that and he an attractive balance that he says, oh, I'll give you half my kingdom.

John about his head -- Yeah. -- and then it's o. Yeah. But because I fear man, more than I fear God. He gets played.

He gets played by his his his his wife, you know. Yeah. And and the big thing is he's he shuts them out of the profit. You know, the the prophet, God got God has been so kind to him, you know, in sending this man, And and and herod, again, he he he is something about John that he likes to listen to him. He's something about him that that he's attracted to his to his to his words.

But in the end, he's more worried about what people think about him. And so he kills the prophet. He shuts the prophet's nothing. He he shuts out, you know, he blocks his ears, basically, shuts out the voice of God in his life. Yeah.

And, you know, he's blind to he's he's blind to God's kindness to it. And and because he's ignored the word about it, we talked about this before when you ignore the word taken away from you. Yeah. Yeah. And then yeah.

And so this is really seen when Christ -- Yeah. -- comes before Harry. Yeah. And and and it's a sermon without words. Yeah.

Yeah. Because because Harry is talking to her and Jesus won't speak to her. Yeah. Because you shut the mouth of the of the prophet, you pointed to me the lamb. Yeah.

And have the words been taken away from you. And again, I think that's another CERN towards it and to people that actually If you refuse to listen to God's word -- Yes. -- then God's word will be taken, yeah, and judgment face And and and it's interesting. This this is seems to be the whole point of chapter 6, isn't it? He's a prophet without honor in his own hometown.

People wouldn't listen, Jesus can't do much there. You know, he sends out the 12 and people, they can hear the message, and welcome the disciples. Yeah. And then we get this you know, this this story about about herod who who, you know, shuts enough of the profit, you know, and and that's it. Yeah.

It's too late for him. He's had his chance. Yeah. So it's quite it's quite a strong wand, isn't it? Yeah.

Yeah. And and this is all within the context of who is who is Jesus? Yeah. And so next time -- Yeah. -- he's gonna show who he really is.

Yeah. Yeah. Brilliant. Come back to that.
