The great news is, God doesn’t just tell us what to do; he enables us to do it, by the power of Jesus living in us through the Holy Spirit.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: the old has gone, the new is here!”
If you’re gay, and you become a Christian, you shouldn’t expect to instantly stop being gay. God doesn’t often ‘zap’ people that way. Rather, he changes us over time; and in our struggles, he enables us to find joy and satisfaction in life even as we are denied the things we want. But there are things you wish were different in your life. For lots of reasons, your body is probably one of them.
Being a Christian doesn’t take that away. But it does mean your identity becomes more about Jesus – and your body and sense of self and self-expression become less important. In time, looking good will mean a lot less to you than doing good; and your disappointment, pain and sorrow about not having the body you want will seem smaller than they do now. You will be loved and welcomed by the church. And if you chose to try and follow Jesus, no matter how hard or painful, your Christian brothers and sisters will come alongside and help.
“Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”
Instead of worrying that relationships would be better if you could only look or feel different, you’ll discover that deep and satisfying relationships are all about loving commitment regardless of those things. God will give you strength, and you will find love and acceptance. And you will have a new hope.
